What story boards look like

Edit: Because people were asking, this was done in photoshop. When We pitch, we don't make a video file like this. normally we would just click through them on the computer and make the noises and voices ourselves for the pitch.

Here is a small sample I did for my class to show what story boards look like. The editor would take these and time them out and add sound. Here I just have them set to play through with no particular timing.

  1. WOW, that was amazing!! definitely going to shoot for something that clean next time I do a storyboard.

Also I just wanted to give a huge THANK YOU to you for this amazing blog! I've been reading through this one and your main art blog for the last few days, and it's been really educational and super inspiring. Keep it up!

  3. All I am doing at the moment is Animatics (It's what we call them over here) and it is amazing how many people in the industry just don't understand there importance with animation.
    Lovely drawings btw

  4. Fantastic sequence! My big question is, how many layers? I notice some drawings are rolling through various backgrounds, so you've got to be using photoshop layers, or similar feature in an animation/film program... yes? love your sense of physics and gravity. thanks!

  6. I'm curious to know if you typically work that tightly as far as timing goes. It seems very close to animatic as a lot of the shots contain not redundent information, but exceptionally fine granularity, more like key drawings than shot/action delineation. Beautiful work nonetheless, and I'd like thank you for this blog, it's loaded with great insight.

  8. How many images is the story board? Are storyboards for animation usually animated. I read in ImagineFX about something called Animatics which seem similar.
    Awesome looking though.

  9. This scene had something like 172 panels and took about 6 hours. I just draw it out one panel at a time. I work in groups and usually have two layers. The background and the character. But sometimes there are more layers. I try to keep the layers to just 2 or 3 in general.

  10. What program do you use to do your storyboards? I currently use Flash, and it has it's pluses, but it's draw backs too (such as the line quality and lack of tones.

Great stuff, btw. Your drawing ability makes me cry. Then work harder.

  11. Awesome!.. Like Rajesh asked is that in flash and do you perfer to use paper or just go strait to digital? Thanks for sharing this with us.

  12. So when you want to "lightbox" something, you have to copy and paste to another layer? It seems so tedious that way, unless you've found a better workflow.

But the results are worth whatever process you're using.

  13. Rajesh: I write actions for everything. I just hit one button and I'm ready to draw the next panel. It is much faster than flash.

  14. Nice! I'd love to see a tutorial on that as Flash has hit some nerves one too many times :)

  15. Hi Rad,

Do you use some form of onion skinning in photoshop? An action to create a new file from the previous but with that as a low opacity layer maybe?

Thanks - your blog is really inspiring.

  16. Another great way for doing these kind of animatics is to use the Storyboarding tools in TVP Animation because TVP has an actual timeline, along with layers , so it's less cumbersome to use than Photoshop and the drawing can be timed precisely within TVP's timeline without taking the drawings into another application like AfterEffects or Premiere to make the animatic. (check out the link above and also here and this link, too.

  19. video not available .... AAAAAAAArgh! And I would be very interested in a tutorial on the process of the storyboard you write in Photoshop.

  21. do you thumbnail first or just go for it?

  22. Yes, this is great- you animation people are scary, with your awesome gesture drawing, and speed. Probably the most energetic "board-a-matic" I've seen (meaning that it has zero animation).
